Here’s why that contradicts almost every list you’ll read: a dynamic mic has lower sensitivity and rejects sound from behind it, so in an untreated room it captures more of you and less of the room. A condenser captures more detail — including every reflection, the fridge, and the street. If your room is treated, or you record quiet fingerstyle, the Audio-Technica AT2035 at $159 is the better buy.

What’s the best mic for home songwriting under $200?

The Shure SM58, $109. It’s the default answer for a reason that has nothing to do with the microphone and everything to do with where you’re recording.

Most home recording happens in a bedroom with parallel walls, a hard floor and no treatment. In that space the room is the loudest problem in the signal path — and a condenser’s sensitivity means it records that problem in higher fidelity.

A $1,000 condenser in a bare-walled bedroom often sounds worse than a $100 dynamic in the same room. The expensive mic isn’t failing. It’s succeeding at capturing something you didn’t want.

Should I buy a condenser or a dynamic?

Best at: vocals, strummed acoustic, anything in a noisy or reflective room. Weak at: quiet fingerstyle detail, airy top end.

Dynamic · cardioid. Mechanically near-identical to the SM58 — the main difference is the grille, which lets you get closer to a source. Frequently called the most-recorded instrument mic in history. If you record more guitar than voice, buy this one instead.

Best at: acoustic guitar, amps, snare. Weak at: needs a pop filter for vocals; the SM58’s ball grille does that job built in.

The condenser, if your room earns it

Audio-Technica AT2035$159.00

Large-diaphragm condenser · cardioid. Low self-noise, includes a shock mount, and has a switchable 80 Hz high-pass plus a −10 dB pad — both genuinely useful. The high-pass alone removes a chunk of the low-frequency room energy the mic would otherwise capture.

Best at: detailed vocals, fingerstyle, treated or partially treated rooms. Weak at: untreated rooms — it will faithfully record your walls.

The one everyone recommends

Audio-Technica AT2020$119.00

Condenser · cardioid. The default recommendation on nearly every “best under $200” list, and a perfectly good mic. But if you’re spending $119 on a condenser, the AT2035 at $159 is worth the extra $40 — the pad, the high-pass and the included shock mount are real. And if the $40 is the deciding factor, the $109 SM58 will serve you better in an untreated room anyway.

Verdict: not wrong, just rarely the optimal choice at either end of the decision.

Do I need a preamp for a dynamic mic?

Usually not — but check the gain spec before you buy, because this is where budget dynamics catch people out.

Dynamic mics output far less signal than condensers. For quiet sources you want roughly 50–60 dB of clean gain. Most current budget interfaces manage it, but you may find yourself near maximum gain, and that’s where cheap preamps start hissing.

The honest caveat: if you sing quietly or play fingerstyle, an SM58 on a very cheap interface can be noisy. The usual fix is an inline preamp such as a Cloudlifter — which costs roughly as much as the mic and blows the budget entirely. If that’s you, the AT2035 condenser is the more sensible purchase.

Where do I point the mic at an acoustic guitar?

At the 12th to 14th fret, six to twelve inches away, angled slightly toward the body. Never at the soundhole.

The soundhole is a bass port — it’s where the low-frequency energy exits. Aiming a mic into it gives you a boomy, unbalanced recording that EQ can reduce but never really repair, because you didn’t capture the balance in the first place.

The 12th–14th fret area is where string detail and body resonance meet. From there:

  • Move toward the neck (higher frets, ~15th–17th) → more string detail, more pick attack, less low end
  • Move toward the body (~10th fret and below) → warmer, fuller, boomier
  • Move further away → more room in the recording. In an untreated room, that’s a cost, not a feature

Proximity effect is the bass boost that happens as you get closer to any directional mic. It’s a tone control you operate with your body.

Most guides warn you about it. That’s backwards — it’s the fastest EQ you have, and it sounds more natural than any plugin doing the same job after the fact:

  • Thin, reedy voice? Move to 2–3 inches. Instant weight.
  • Boomy voice or guitar? Back off to 8–12 inches.
  • Want intimacy? Close and quiet beats far and loud, every time.

Can I record voice and guitar with one mic?

Yes — and for songwriting demos it’s usually better than two.

Place one mic between your mouth and the guitar, roughly chest height, angled toward whichever needs more presence. Typically that’s the voice, so aim maybe 60% toward your mouth and 40% toward the 12th fret.

If you do use two mics, obey the 3:1 rule: the distance between the two mics should be at least three times the distance from each mic to its own source. A mic 6 inches from the guitar means the vocal mic sits at least 18 inches away from it. Ignore this and the two signals partially cancel when summed — which is why some two-mic recordings sound thinner than either mic alone.

A real demo session, start to finish

Same song we’ve used across this series — Am–F–C–G at 84 BPM, from the pedal guide. This time it’s a voice-and-guitar demo, one SM58, untreated 11 × 12 ft bedroom.

Input — the setup

Mic: SM58 · Interface gain: ~55 dB · Target level: peaks around −12 dBFS
Room: untreated bedroom, laptop on the desk to my right, window behind me.

Position: mic on a stand at chest height, roughly 10 inches from my mouth and 14 inches from the 12th fret, angled about 60% toward the voice. The back of the mic points at the laptop.

Analysis — why each choice
  • Dynamic, not condenser — untreated room, and there’s a laptop fan running. A condenser would capture both faithfully.
  • Back of the mic at the laptop — a cardioid rejects most at 180°. This is free, costs nothing, and takes three seconds.
  • 10 inches from the mouth, not 4 — I’m strumming, so I need the guitar in the same capture. At 4 inches the voice would dominate and the guitar would sound distant.
  • Aimed at the 12th fret, not the soundhole — the soundhole would add boom that fights the vocal in exactly the frequency range where a male voice sits.
  • −12 dBFS, not −3 — headroom for the loud chorus strum I know is coming.
Output — what came out, and the one fix

Take 1: guitar too loud on the Am and F bars, vocal buried. Diagnosis: I was strumming harder than I sing, and the mic was closer to the guitar than I’d measured.

The fix took eight seconds and no plugins: moved the stand two inches toward my mouth and re-angled slightly. That’s it.

Take 2: balance right. Done in under four minutes total.

What I did NOT do: add EQ, add compression, add reverb, re-record with two mics, or blame the SM58. The problem was three inches of geometry. Nearly every “my recordings sound bad” problem is geometry, and geometry is free to fix.


Level-up: the mic as a fader you operate with your body

This is the part budget-mic articles don’t have, because it isn’t about the mic at all.

With one mic, the balance between your voice and your guitar isn’t a mixing decision. It’s a performance decision — and you make it by moving.

Singer-songwriters who record this way don’t set the balance and hold still. They lean in on the quiet verse to bring the voice forward, and pull back a couple of inches on the loud chorus so the strum doesn’t swamp it. The mic becomes a fader you operate with your torso, in real time, as part of the performance.

Two reasons this beats fixing it in the mix. First, it’s free and instant. Second — and this is the real one — the movement is musical. Leaning into a lyric is something you already do when you mean it. You’re not compensating for a mic; you’re letting the mic hear what you were already doing.

in opposite directions, and the listener hears effort
without hearing volume.

The free upgrade nobody uses: the null point

A cardioid mic rejects most strongly at 180° — directly behind it. That rejection is significant and completely free.

So before every take: identify the loudest noise source in the room (laptop fan, window, fridge, air conditioning) and aim the back of the mic at it. Then rotate the whole setup — you and the mic together — until the noise is quietest. You’ve just applied noise reduction that no plugin can match, because the noise was never recorded.

The 30-day plan

The rule that makes this work: move the mic before you touch a plugin. Every time. If a take sounds wrong, the first response is six inches of repositioning, not an EQ. Reaching for a plugin trains you to fix problems downstream, which is slower, sounds worse, and never teaches you anything you can reuse.
