Three pedals that make you write more — not three pedals that make you sound better. Those are different lists, and almost everyone buys the wrong one.
Quick answer
- Buy the looper first. It’s the only pedal that changes what you’re able to do — it holds a progression down so both hands are free to hunt for a melody over the top.
- Set delay to a dotted eighth: 60000 ÷ BPM × 0.75. At 120 BPM that’s 375 ms. Then play fewer notes than the part needs and let the repeats fill the gaps.
- Looper last in the chain = you write over a finished texture. Looper first = you sweep effects across a dry loop. Two different pedals, same box, depending on where you plug it.
- Reverb decay length decides how many notes the part can hold. Long decay (3s+) and a busy part turn to mud — the reverb is telling you to play less.
- A compressor, an overdrive and a tuner will not help you finish a song. They’re worth owning. They’re just not writing tools, and buying them first is why people own eleven pedals and no finished songs.
Players who can hold a progression but stall the moment they try to write a melody over it — and anyone with a drawer of half-finished voice memos.
You already finish songs regularly. Pedals add decisions, and decisions are what kill drafts. Also skip if you write primarily in a DAW with a mouse in hand.

Do I need pedals to write songs?
No. People wrote songs for centuries without them, and the best songwriting tool is still a quiet room and something that records. Pedals solve one narrow problem: most writers stall because they can only hear one part at a time, and you can’t write a counter-melody against a part that exists only in your memory.
If you already finish songs regularly, pedals will not improve your writing and may slow it down. Every pedal is a decision, and decisions are what kill drafts.
What’s the difference between generative and corrective pedals?
A corrective pedal improves the sound of something you already played. A generative pedal changes what you play in the first place.
That distinction is the whole guide. It’s also why so many people own a full board and finish nothing — the pedal wall is organised by tone, so that’s what gets bought.

Ask of any pedal: does this change what I play, or how what I played sounds? If it’s the second one, it’s a mixing decision wearing a writing decision’s clothes.
Which three pedals should I buy first?
Looper, delay, reverb — in that order. Roughly $110–$150 for all three at budget-new prices. Specific models, with prices checked 8 August 2026:

Looper or delay — which do I buy first?
The looper, and it isn’t close. A delay changes how a part feels. A looper changes what you’re able to do.
Here’s the specific mechanism. When you’re writing, you need to hear a progression continuously while both hands are free to hunt for a melody over it. Without a looper you have three bad options: play the chords and hum the melody, record to your phone and lose the immediacy, or hold the whole progression in your head. All three are why writers stall.
A looper removes that constraint for $35. Nothing else on the pedal wall does.

How do I set delay time to match my tempo?
Divide 60000 by your tempo to get a quarter note in milliseconds, then multiply by 0.75 for a dotted eighth. At 120 BPM: 60000 ÷ 120 = 500 ms per quarter, × 0.75 = 375 ms.
The dotted eighth is the useful one for writing because it lands between your notes instead of on top of them. Play on the beat and the repeat arrives on the second sixteenth — so a part with four notes in it sounds like a part with eight, and you didn’t play the other four.

What order should pedals go in for songwriting?
Guitar → octave/pitch → delay → reverb → looper. That’s the writing chain, and it differs from the standard tone chain in one specific place: the looper goes last.
With the looper last, it records the effected signal. Your loop plays back as a finished texture — delay trails, reverb tail and all — and you write over something that already sounds like a record rather than something that sounds like a practice room.
That single placement decision does more for the quality of what you write than any pedal upgrade, because you’re responding to a real sound instead of imagining one.

A real writing session, start to finish
Here’s an entire session with the chain above. Nothing hypothetical — this is the actual sequence, with fret numbers.
Progression: Am – F – C – G. One bar each, 84 BPM. Ubiquitous for a reason: it’s i–VI–III–VII in A minor, and the bass moves by step or fourth every time.
Delay: 60000 ÷ 84 = 714 ms per quarter × 0.75 = 536 ms. Feedback for 3 repeats, mix ~30%.
Reverb: hall, decay ~2.5 s, mix ~25%.
Looper: last in chain, so it captures the wet signal.
Record four bars of chords. Strum on beats 1 and 3 only — a busy strum leaves no room for what comes next, and this is the mistake that ends most loop sessions before they start.
A minor pentatonic (A C D E G) works over the entire progression. Worth checking why, because the “why” is what lets you do it over a different progression next week:
- Over Am (A C E) — A, C and E are chord tones. D and G are colour.
- Over F (F A C) — A and C are chord tones. D is the 6th, which is warm. E is the major 7th, tense — treat it as a passing note, don’t land on it.
- Over C (C E G) — C, E and G are all chord tones. This bar is safe.
- Over G (G B D) — G and D are chord tones. A is the 9th, E is the 13th, both lovely. C is the 11th — passing note only.
So: five notes, four chords, two of which need care. That’s the whole analysis.
A minor pentatonic, 5th position. Four notes, played only on beats 1 and 3. The delay supplies beats 2 and 4.

Delay fills 2 and 4 at 536 ms.
What you hear: an eight-note phrase. What you played: four notes. The gap between those two numbers is the entire argument of this page.
Then stop. Print it, record it to your phone, move on. The session ends here — not after twenty more minutes of playing over the loop, which is practice, and feels like writing, and isn’t.
Level-up: moving the looper changes what the looper is
This is the part most pedal guides don’t have, because it isn’t a gear tip — it’s a compositional one.
Everything above assumes the looper sits last. Move it to the front and you get a different instrument out of the same box.
Now the looper captures a dry signal, and every effect downstream applies to the playback live. Which means you can sweep effects across a fixed loop while it runs.

Why this matters for writing rather than performing: looper-first lets you audition an arrangement before you’ve written one. Record eight bars of a verse riff dry, then run it four times — clean, then + delay, then + octave, then everything. You’ve just heard four sections of a song that doesn’t exist yet, and you’ll know within two minutes which one is the chorus.
SETUP Looper FIRST in chain. Effects after it. WHAT TO PLAY Record 8 bars of one riff, dry, no effects on. Then let it loop 4 times without touching the guitar. PASS 1 Everything off. (= verse?) PASS 2 Delay on. (= pre-chorus?) PASS 3 Delay + octave down. (= chorus?) PASS 4 Everything + long reverb. (= bridge/outro?) REPS Once per riff. Do not repeat — first instinct is the useful data here. SUCCESS CRITERION You're done when you can name which pass is the chorus without playing a single extra note. If all four sound the same, the riff isn't strong enough to carry a song. That's useful too — and it took two minutes to find out instead of three weeks.
The 30-day plan
Ten minutes a day. Guitar in hand. No written homework. Copy this into a notes app and tick it off.
Ten minutes a day recording four-bar loops only. No overdubs, no effects, no judging the loop. The single goal is a clean seam: the loop should start and end at the click without a stumble. Most people never get this right and then wonder why writing over their loops feels wrong. Target: 20 clean loops by day 7.
Add the delay. Run Drill 1 daily at three different tempos. The exercise every day: play a part you like, then delete every second note and let the delay fill the gap. Target: one part per day that sounds busier than what you actually played.
Add reverb. Play one phrase at 0.5 s, 2 s and 5 s decay and note how many notes each version can hold before it turns to mud. This is the week the tool becomes a decision-maker: the decay length is telling you how much to play. Target: you can pick a decay time before you write the part.
All three, chain in writing order. Run Drill 2 on three riffs to find their arrangements. Then pick one, write a second part, and print it to audio the same day. Not mixed, not fixed — finished. Target: one recorded, complete, unmixed song sketch by day 30. That’s the whole point.
