How do I stop my room ruining the recording?
Get closer to the guitar and get the guitar away from hard parallel surfaces. Distance is what lets the room into a recording, so in an untreated space a closer mic is simply a better mic.
Beyond that: avoid recording in the centre of a square room, keep out of corners, and put something soft behind the microphone and behind yourself — a duvet on a mic stand, an open wardrobe of clothes, a sofa. You’re not trying to build a studio, only to stop the first reflections reaching the mic.
TEST 3 — THE CLAP TEST
Setup: You, in [ROOM], no gear needed
Do this: 1. Stand where you'd record. Clap once, sharply.
2. Listen to what happens after the clap.
3. Move to three other spots in the same room.
Clap in each.
Pass: One spot has a noticeably shorter, drier decay
with no audible "ring" or flutter after the clap.
Record there.
Fail: Every spot rings. Add soft material — bedding,
coats, a sofa moved in — and clap again.
Note: A flutter echo is the fast metallic "brrrp"
after a clap between two parallel hard walls.
If you hear it, you are standing in the worst
possible place. Move.

Why does my recorded guitar sound different from how it sounds to me?
Because you hear your guitar from above and behind it, blended with the whole room. A microphone hears one small area from one angle, with no blending. That gap is normal and it’s why a recording can sound thin or nasal when the instrument sounds fine to you.
It also means fixing the recording is usually a placement problem rather than a guitar problem — you’re not making the guitar sound wrong, you’re aiming at the wrong part of it.
What should I change about my playing when recording?
Play more evenly and slightly more gently than you would live. Microphones exaggerate dynamic inconsistency, so a heavy accent that reads as expressive in a room can read as a spike on a recording. Input — the complaint. “My fingerpicked demo sounds great on its own and disappears when I add the vocal.” Setup: dreadnought, large-diaphragm condenser at roughly 4 inches from the soundhole, spare bedroom, no treatment, cardioid pattern.
Step 1 — identify the three stacked problems. Not one fault, three, and each one compounds the others:

Step 2 — the fix, in order, costing nothing:

No EQ. No new gear. No plugin.
Step 3 — the listening test that confirmed it. Both versions played under the same rough vocal:
Before: solo, warm and full. Under the vocal, the guitar and the vocal’s chest register fought for the same space — the guitar became a low rumble and lost its picking definition entirely.
After: solo, noticeably thinner and slightly disappointing on its own. Under the vocal, the picking pattern stayed audible and the vocal sat on top without either part being turned down.
Output — the counterintuitive lesson. The better recording sounded worse in isolation. That’s the point, and it’s why judging acoustic tone solo produces demos that collapse in the mix. The right question is never “does this sound good?” — it’s “does this sound good under the vocal?“
Guitar-side note. For a dreadnought specifically, moving slightly further toward the neck than the standard 12th fret — around the 14th — is often the better landing spot, because the body is contributing so much low end already. On a smaller-bodied guitar the reverse tends to be true.

Repeat only when you change guitar or room.
Why blind and level-matched
Because louder sounds better and expectation sounds better. If you know take 5 is the classic position you will hear it as correct, and if one take is 2 dB louder you will prefer it regardless of tone. Level-matching and blind ranking remove both biases, and they’re the only reason the exercise produces a real answer rather than a confirmation of what you already believed.
What the map usually reveals
- Large-bodied guitars — dreadnoughts and jumbos — tend to prefer positions 1–3, further toward the neck, because the body already supplies plenty of low end.
- Small-bodied guitars — parlours, concerts, 000s — often prefer 7–9, nearer the soundhole, which gives back the body they lack.
- Untreated rooms push the answer toward the 6-inch column, because less distance means less room.
- Fingerstyle usually lands nearer the neck than strumming, because the attack detail matters more than the body.
