Spotify Adds Editor-Led Video to New Music Friday (U.S.)

Spotify rolled out editor-led short-form video recommendations directly inside its flagship New Music Friday playlist for U.S. listeners on June 12. Curators now appear alongside track picks with video context explaining their selections, spotlighting emerging artists, and sharing stories behind the songs.

The update integrates content from The Drop Weekly (launched September 2025) into New Music Friday, creating a single destination that combines playlist curation with editorial video storytelling. It is available to both free and Premium users via the Spotify mobile app.

Infrastructure + Velocity Signal

This is a clear infrastructure upgrade that makes human editorial taste more visible and contextual within one of streaming’s highest-traffic discovery mechanisms. The Drop Weekly has already delivered more than double the engagement (saves and likes) on editor-led video content, providing early precedent.

Early read: Indie and emerging releases that align with curatorial taste profiles have a tangible new avenue for higher engagement. Listeners now get direct insight into why a track was chosen, which can drive saves, shares, and algorithmic follow-on plays beyond pure data-driven placement.

“By bringing our editors directly into the experience, we’re giving listeners a closer connection to the people behind the playlist and more context around the artists and songs shaping culture right now,” John Stein, Head of North America Editorial, said.
