Except the music doesn’t rest on G. The riff begins on D, each cycle returns to D, and the vocal melody centres on D. Your ear says D is home. Your chord analysis says G major.

Both are describing the same seven notes and disagreeing about the tonic. When the note collection belongs to one major scale but the tonal centre sits on a different degree of it, you have a mode. D is the fifth degree of G major, and the fifth mode is Mixolydian. So the precise description is D Mixolydian: a D-centred sound using G major’s notes, which produces a major-sounding tonic with a flat 7th (the C natural instead of C#).
