Music Theory for Songwriters: The Complete Guide

Songwriters need far less music theory than they think, but they need it in a different form: instead of memorising scales and key signatures, learn to hear each chord as a number in a key — because once a progression is 1–5–6–4 rather than C–G–Am–F, you can transpose it for any singer, recognise it in a thousand other songs, and swap any chord for another that does the same job. The goal is not to analyse what you wrote. It is to know what else you could have written.

  • There are only six chords you need in any major key. In C that’s C, Dm, Em, F, G and Am. Nearly all popular music is built from those six, in some order.

Time cost, honestly: 10 minutes a day. You’ll convert your first song to numbers on day one. Around day 8–12 you’ll start hearing progressions as numbers while listening to the radio, which is the moment the skill becomes useful rather than academic. By day 30 you should be able to sit down in any of five keys, know your six chords without thinking, and reach for a borrowed chord deliberately instead of stumbling onto one.


How much music theory does a songwriter actually need?

Much less than a music degree teaches and slightly more than most self-taught writers have. The working minimum is three things: the six chords available in any key, the ability to number them rather than name them, and a handful of chords borrowed from outside the key for emotional colour. That’s roughly a fortnight of ten-minute sessions.

What you can safely ignore, at least at first: notation reading, modes, four-part voice leading, and most of what a first-year harmony course covers. Those matter for arrangers and film composers. They rarely decide whether a song works.

Do I need to know music theory to write songs?

No — plenty of celebrated songwriters have written extraordinary music without naming a single chord. But there’s a cost, and it’s specific: without theory you can only write what you stumble onto. Every songwriter has a set of shapes their hands default to, and without a framework you’ll circle those shapes indefinitely.

Theory doesn’t generate ideas. It widens the field of ideas you can reach for on purpose. That’s the entire argument for it.

What are the six chords in a key, and why only six?

Every major scale produces seven chords, one built on each note. Six of them are usable in ordinary songwriting; the seventh is a diminished chord that appears rarely in popular music. The pattern of qualities is identical in every key: major, minor, minor, major, major, minor.

Numbered, that’s 1, 2m, 3m, 4, 5, 6m. Once you know the pattern, you know all twelve keys, because the pattern never changes.

What is the Nashville Number System, and why do songwriters use it?

The Nashville Number System writes chords as numbers relative to the key instead of by letter name. “Let It Be” becomes 1–5–6m–4 whether you play it in C, in G, or in E♭ for a singer with a lower range. Session players in Nashville adopted it because it makes transposition instantaneous — the chart doesn’t change, only the key you count from.

For songwriters the value is different and larger: numbering reveals that songs you thought were unrelated share identical architecture, which turns every song you know into a template you can borrow from.

What do chords actually do in a song?

Three jobs, and every chord in a key does one of them. Home is the 1, with the 6m and 3m as softer versions of home. Away is the 4 and the 2m — motion, openness, the sense of having left. Pull-home is the 5, which creates the strongest expectation of return in Western music.

Writing a progression is choosing how long to sit at home, how far to wander, and how hard to pull back. A song that never leaves home is static. One that never pulls back feels unresolved — which is sometimes exactly right.

Why do so many songs use the same four chords?

Because 1–5–6m–4 solves four problems at once: it starts at home, moves to the strongest tension chord, drops into the relative minor for emotional shading, then returns through the 4 without the finality of a full 5–1 cadence. That last detail is why it loops so well — it never quite closes, so it can repeat indefinitely under a vocal.

It isn’t laziness. It’s a progression with an unusual combination of stability and forward motion, which is exactly what a song that has to repeat forty times needs.

Which chord progressions should every songwriter know?

Why does classroom theory fail songwriters?

Because it teaches analysis when songwriters need generation. A theory course trains you to look at existing music and label it. A songwriter needs the opposite operation: given where you are, what could plausibly come next, and what would each option feel like. Same material, opposite direction of travel.

Worked example: “Let It Be,” analysed and then rewritten

Here is the entire chain on a real song — numbers, function, and then three deliberate alterations.

Input — the verse progression. The Beatles’ “Let It Be” in C major:

Step 2 — read the function. Line one is home → pull-home → soft home → away, and crucially it ends on the 4, which is why the phrase spills forward into the next line instead of stopping. Line two repeats the opening but resolves 4 → 1, closing the sentence. Two lines, one open, one closed. That’s the whole architecture.

Step 3 — transpose it instantly. Because it’s numbers, moving key is arithmetic, not re-learning:

Fm = barre at fret 1. If the barre is a problem, play
just the top four strings: x x 3 1 1 1.
The move that matters is F major's A note dropping
one fret to A♭. That single semitone is the effect.

Level-up: borrowed chords, and the one that does the most work

This is the section competing guides won’t have, because most treat modal interchange as an advanced topic rather than the cheapest emotional lever available to a beginner.

A borrowed chord is one taken from the parallel minor key — same root note, different scale. In C major you borrow from C minor. You aren’t changing key; you’re briefly colouring one chord darker. Three are worth knowing, and they cost nothing to learn.

The minor 4 — the most emotionally efficient chord in popular music

Play C, then F, then Fm, then C again. The move from F to Fm changes exactly one note — the A drops to A♭ — and the effect is out of all proportion to the change. It reads as resignation, or tenderness, or the moment a song admits something.

Once you have this in your hands you’ll hear it everywhere, because writers reach for it precisely when a lyric turns.

The ♭7 — rock’s escape hatch

In C, that’s B♭ — a major chord built on a note outside the key. It removes the leading-tone pull entirely, which is why 1–♭7–4 sounds like rock rather than pop. It doesn’t want to resolve, so it can churn indefinitely.

The 5-of-5 — a borrowed pull toward a chord that isn’t home

In C, D major instead of the usual Dm. It’s the “5 chord” of G, so it pulls hard toward G rather than toward C. Use it one bar before you hit the 5 and the arrival lands twice as hard. This is a secondary dominant; the name matters less than the sound.

The real-world case: “Creep”

Radiohead’s “Creep” is four bars, in G major, and it uses two borrowed chords out of four:

Two of the four chords are outside the key, and the song is otherwise harmonically simple. That is the entire lesson of this section: the emotional weight of a progression usually comes from one or two chords that don’t belong, not from complexity.

How do I write a melody that fits my chords?

Start with the rule, then break it deliberately. The rule: land on chord tones — the notes inside the chord you’re playing — on strong beats, and pass through the others on weak beats. A melody that hits the third of each chord on beat one will sound intentional no matter what else you do.

The break: holding a non-chord tone across a strong beat creates tension the ear wants resolved, which is the oldest trick for making a plain progression feel unfinished and forward-moving.

Should songwriters learn modes?

Not early, and not as a system. Modes become useful when you notice a song sits on a chord that isn’t the 1 — a progression circling D while using the notes of G major, for instance. At that point learning that it’s D Mixolydian explains something you already heard.
