The finger-strength argument is folklore. Here’s what the numbers actually say — and the question that matters more than either.
The short version
- Physically easiest, in order: nylon-string classical (~90 lbs tension) → electric (~110–130 lbs) → steel-string acoustic (~180 lbs).
- The finger-strength argument is backwards. Strength comes from hours played, and you play more when it doesn’t hurt.
- Nylon-string is the option most guides omit — half the tension of steel acoustic, and the gentlest possible start.
- Electric can be practised silently. For anyone in an apartment or with sleeping kids, that often decides it.
- Switching later is easy. Chords, theory, technique and repertoire all transfer. This decision is far less permanent than it feels.

What the numbers actually say
“Acoustic is harder” is true, and it’s measurable. Most articles assert it and move on. Here’s the actual difference.
Total tension across all six strings. Figures are typical rather than absolute — gauge, scale length and tuning all shift them.
Two comparisons worth holding onto:
- A steel-string acoustic carries roughly twice the total tension of a nylon-string classical.
- It carries roughly 60% more than a light electric set.
Per string, the gap is the same story: acoustic strings run around 30 lbs each against roughly 18–22 lbs on electric — about 150% of the tension. And the recommended beginner gauges compound it: .010 is a standard electric starting point, while acoustics typically ship with .011 or .012. Thicker string, higher tension, both working against a fingertip that hasn’t developed a callus yet.

The finger-strength myth
You will be told, repeatedly, that beginners should start on acoustic because it builds finger strength and makes everything else feel easy afterwards. It’s the most repeated piece of guitar advice in existence, and the logic doesn’t hold.
Finger strength and calluses come from hours played, not from difficulty per hour.
An instrument that hurts reduces the time you spend on it. Less time means slower callus development, slower muscle memory, slower everything — including the strength the advice was supposed to build.
There’s no established teaching principle that says a beginner should deliberately choose the harder instrument. We don’t hand new swimmers ankle weights. The advice survives because it sounds like discipline, and because the people repeating it succeeded on acoustic and assume the difficulty helped rather than that they persisted despite it.
Where the advice is genuinely right: if you want to play acoustic — if the sound you hear in your head is a singer-songwriter with a steel-string — then start on acoustic. Not as an ordeal, but because it’s what you want. That’s a completely different reason and it’s a good one.
The question that actually decides it
Not “which is easier?” but “which one will I pick up tomorrow?”
Practice frequency is the single largest variable in learning guitar — more than talent, more than teacher quality, more than instrument choice. Twenty minutes most days beats two hours on Sunday, and it beats it by a wide margin. So the correct instrument is the one that produces the most twenty-minute sessions.
That’s almost always the one that plays the music you already love. A beginner who wants to play Metallica and is handed a dreadnought acoustic is being set up to lose interest — not because acoustic is bad, but because nothing they play on it will sound like the thing that made them want to start.

The third option nobody mentions
The framing “acoustic or electric” quietly excludes the gentlest instrument of the three. Nylon-string classical guitars are built for around 90 lbs of total tension — roughly half a steel-string acoustic — and nylon is dramatically softer on an untoughened fingertip than steel.
This isn’t an argument that everyone should start on nylon. It’s an argument that a binary framing hides a real option — and for the specific people above, it’s often the right one.

The apartment argument
For a lot of adults, this is the factor that actually decides it — and almost nobody lists it.
Most practice amps have a headphone output. Plug in, and an electric guitar is silent to everyone else in the building. An unplugged electric is quieter still — audible to you, barely present to anyone in the next room.
An acoustic guitar has one volume. You can play gently, but you cannot play at 11pm in a shared apartment, or after the kids are asleep, or in a hotel room, without being heard.
Since practice frequency is the whole game, an instrument you can play at the times you’re actually free is worth more than a marginal difference in tone preference. If your realistic practice window is late evening in a building with thin walls, that’s not a small consideration — it’s the deciding one.
What this choice does not determine
Almost everything you’re about to learn is identical on both. Same tuning, same fretboard, same chord shapes, same scales, same theory. The anxiety about picking “wrong” is disproportionate to the stakes.

Most players who switch feel at home within a few weeks. Many end up owning both eventually and using each for different things. You are not choosing an identity. You’re choosing what to pick up this evening.
So: which one?

This decision matters far less than the time you’re spending on it.
Three weeks of research is three weeks not playing. Pick one this week, get it set up properly, and start. If it turns out to be the wrong one, you’ll know within a month and switching costs less than you think.

If an older child specifically wants electric because of the music they listen to, that’s a reasonable choice — interest matters more than any theoretical starting-instrument rule.
Does it matter which guitar I learn on for chords and theory?
No. The fretboard, standard tuning, chord shapes, scales and all underlying theory are identical across acoustic, electric and classical guitars. What you learn on one applies directly to the others. Differences in technique are real but sit on top of a shared foundation, which is why the choice of first instrument affects your comfort and enthusiasm far more than what you’re actually able to learn.
